Dear Julie, |
|
Welcome to this week's
edition of the FAHSA Link!
Next week, celebrate
National Nurse's
Week: Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow.
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from
May 6, also known as National Nurses Day,
through May 12, 2010, the birthday of Florence
Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
Session
Scheduled to End Late Friday -- The 2010
Legislative Session is scheduled to end on
Friday at 6:00 p.m. At 11:58 p.m. on Monday,
Senate and House budget chiefs agreed to a $70.3
billion budget. In addition to cutting funding
for health care providers and freezing the
salaries of state employees for the fifth
consecutive year, budget negotiators used $600
million in trust funds, $400 million from the
Seminole gambling compact, $40 million in
anticipated revenues from a red light camera
bill, and a portion of expected revenues from a
six-month extension in federal stimulus dollars
to make up for the $3.2 billion projected
deficit for FY 2010-11. Read more of this
article in the
Weekly Legislative Update, posted on FAHSA's
website.

Andrews Estates South, an ACTS Retirement-Life

championship match. The story has made
national headlines, including CNN!
Here's
video from local ABC/WPBF-TV. Before the news
clip begins, a short advertisement will play first.
A league of retirees competing in a video bowling
league was the idea of Dennis Berkholtz, an Atlanta
entrepreneur, and founder of the National Senior
League (www.nslgames.com). There were 144 teams in
23 states across the country who competed over a two
month span, before crowning the national champion on

Preservation on the
Minds of FHFC -- On Wednesday, Steve Protulis,
Executive Director, EHDOC, Jason Pincus, FAHSA's
Housing Chair and Deputy Executive Director, EHDOC,
and Gail Matillo, FAHSA's Director of Housing held a
meeting with Nancy Muller, Policy Director, Florida
Housing Finance Corporation to discuss options for
FAHSA members pursuing funding sources for
rehabilitation since funding from the state is
limited in 2011. At this point, there will not be
any funding for the Elderly Housing Community Loan (EHCL)
program; the State Apartments Incentives Loan
program (SAIL); or the HOME Investment Partnerships
Program.
Yesterday, Jason and Gail then attended Florida
Housing Finance Corporation's (FHFC) First Rule
Workshop in Orlando on the development of the 2011
Universal Application Cycle. The meeting was held
to discuss major changes in the application process
and whether FHFC should invest their limited
resources this year in preservation projects. FAHSA's
housing public policy committee will be working to
develop a preservation plan to present to FHFC.
FHFC has posted their vision for the 2011 Universal
Application Cycle on their website. Public comments
in writing are now being accepted and will be posted
on their website. The next public meeting will be
held on Thursday, June 17, 2010.

Medical
Directors Release Guidance on Transferring
Patients from Acute Care to Skilled Nursing
Facilities -- A new white paper developed
by the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA)
highlights successful and effective processes
for transferring patients from acute care to
skilled nursing facilities.
The goal of the paper is to guide policies and
procedures that enhance communication and
support safe, patient-centered care during
transfer between sites of care. The current
system of care transitions contains significant
deficits, according to the paper. AMDA suggests
some basic steps to serve as a basis for
ensuring safe patient transfer. These include
consistent discussion and documentation of
end-of-life care preferences, educating the
family about reasons for transfer, prompt and
consistent medication reconciliation, and
primary consideration of the patient's
individual preferences.
While the white paper focuses specifically on
transitions between acute care and skilled
nursing care, and vice versa, the AMDA calls for
improved transitions across all care settings.
For more information, or to obtain a copy of the
paper, visit www.amda.com.
